Founders of the present Menop family are Jan Wolters ten Elshof born on Febrauri 16th 1727 in Neede and Maria Gerrits Keizer born in Deventer. Jan and Maria married on October 24th 1762 in Bathmen. The name Menop was a ramnent of Jan's first marriage with Eefse Noever Menop.

The origin of the name Menop can be located in the county of Bathmen, at the spot where coaches used to cross the river Schipbeek. Here, the coach drivers had to encourage their horses and direct them to get to the other side of the river (the dutch word 'mennen' is something like to steer, and to encourage). Since a longe time a big house is situated here with the name Menop. Members of the Menop family probably have lived and worked in the farm nearby.
